WordPress Just Updated to version 4.6

Hello world! I was sick for a long time and it feels good to be back. WordPress just got updated to version 4.6 codenamed PEPPER. The name PEPPER comes from jazz legend Park Frederick Adams III also known as Park Adams. Here are the highlights of this update.

  • Streamlined Updates
  • Native Fonts
  • Editor Improvements
  • and Quite a few backend updates like js library, API, etc

Updating themes, plugins and activating just got better, now the browser does not change urls and page doesn’t reload while you upload, update, activate or install a theme or plugin. This is what wp’s core developers are saying,

Don’t lose your place: stay on the same page while you update, install, and delete your plugins and themes.

WordPress dashboard now uses the fonts you already have installed in your computer and loads much faster. To examine this I digged into the source of dashboard. Here is the css thats taking care of the font in the dashboard,

body {
background: #f1f1f1 none repeat scroll 0 0;
color: #444;
font-family: -apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,"Segoe UI",Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,"Helvetica Neue",sans-serif;
font-size: 13px;
line-height: 1.4em;
min-width: 600px;

For comparing, following is the css for font on WordPress dashboard version 4.5.3,

body {
color: #444;
font-family: "Open Sans",sans-serif;
font-size: 13px;
line-height: 1.4em;
min-width: 600px;

Editor for post and pages got improved also, it now comes with inline link checker and content recovery. If you accidentally put a broken link to any of your anchor text, inline link checker will notify you that you inserted a broken link. WordPress now saves a copy of your content onto the browser’s session storage. If you go to the developer console’s application tab and look inside the session storage dropdown while editing or creating a new post, you will find a new item with your domain name which has some json data stored under vaue which is actually your post’s auto saved content. Isnt this fun 😉

The rest of the updates are not visible to most of the users as they are for backend or as WP devs says “Under The Hood”. Resource hints is one of them, it tells the browser the fetching order of the files. This makes your website faster. Transtation on demand is another interesting feature, it installs language packs for themes and plugins automatically to your selected language form WP.org’s community of translators.

Some js libraries got updated on this new version.

  • Masonry 3.3.2,
  • imagesLoaded 3.2.0,
  • MediaElement.js 2.22.0,
  • TinyMCE 4.4.1 and
  • Backbone.js 1.3.3

Here are some other features those got updated.

  • HTTP Requests
  • WP_Term_Query
  • WP_Post_Type
  • Meta Registration API
  • Customizer APIs for Setting Validation and Notifications
  • Multisite

Some new queries were added for WP’s multisite. Here they are:

  • WP_Site_Query
  • WP_Network_Query

That’s all folks!! Happy WordPressing 😉
